Mike Havlick from the Des Moines YMCA Camp at Boone visited the BK sixth graders as a follow-up to their science unit on owls and their place in the ecosystem. Mike brought a barred owl which resides at the Y Camp. The owl was injured as a result of being hit by a car. Mike stressed never throwing food scraps out of your car as those scraps attract mice. Subsequently, owls swoop in for the mice only to be hit by a moving car. He also showed owl adaptations; if our eyes were as big as an owl’s they would be the size of softballs. The students also learned a song about various owl calls. It was an awesome presentation!
