1. School Christmas concert is scheduled for Thursday at 7:00 P.M. at the High School auditorium. Please remember to pick up your child immediately following the concert in their designated room.
2. Please make sure that your child is dressing appropriately for the weather each day. Now that the temperatures are falling and the snow and ice have arrived, all students should have a hat, pair of gloves or mittens, warm coat, snow pants, and snow boots. If you are unable to do so, please contact me and let me know!
Reading and Language Arts:
- This week, we will be reading the story Cendrillon. It is a story similar to Cinderella and goes along with our theme called “That’s Amazing.”
- Our reading strategy focus will working with a Venn Diagram to make comparisons between the two stories as well as how they contrast one another.
- Our grammar focus this week will consist of identifying main verbs and helping verbs.
- Our spelling list will consist of words that have the /er/ and final /l/ or /el/ sounds.
- Test over the story, reading skills, grammar, and spelling are scheduled for next Monday. If there is no school on this Tuesday, then they will be scheduled for Tuesday.
- The next region that we will be studying is the SW Region of the United States. Students will be learning about the landforms that make up this region, learn how to use various map scales using given maps, and learn about the types of cash crops this region has to offer the United States.
- The next Daily Oral Geography sheet will be assigned and is always due on the last day of the week.
- This week, we will continue working with the metric system.
- A reminder that we need to check and see if our child knows all of their basic math facts for addition, subtraction, and multiplication. They should be practicing them daily! Feel free to check their progress on xtramath.com.
- We will be reading two short stories that will wrap up our theme on American Stories. The students will be reviewing over the reading strategies that we have practiced throughout this them such as drawing inferences, making generalizations, sequencing, and categorizing and classifying.
- Grammar this week will also be review over plural nouns, possessive nouns, and writing compound sentences.
- Spelling words will also be a review over the words we already worked with in this theme. The list will consist of 30-40 words that we will be working with throughout the week.
- We will be finishing up on the Northeast Region of the United States. They will be finishing up on their review questions over chapter 6, then fill out our study guide to get ready for the test the following day.
- We will then move to our science unit on the body systems.
- The students will be solving multi-step word problems modeled with tape diagrams and assess the reasonableness of answers using rounding.
- Create and solve multi-step word problems from given tape diagrams and equations.
- We will then review and get ready for our final assessment over Module 1.
- Please remember to make sure your child is practicing their multiplication facts each evening for at least 10-15 minutes! If your child knows their math facts by heart, it makes learning math so much easier for them!
- Continue to make sure your child is reading at least 15 minutes each evening as well and quizzing every two weeks over the books they are reading.

- Fall Party is scheduled for Friday. The students will be parading at the Care Center at 1:40 and then parading at Richard O. Jacobson at 2:00. The fall party will begin at 2:15 and end at 3:00.
- There will be an informative Math Night meeting on Thursday evening at 6:30 for parents wanting to learn about Engaged New York common core curriculum.
- This week we will continue with reading out of our theme “American Stories” and our next story is entitled “ Boss of the Plains”. Our vocabulary list will consist of common cowboy terms.

- Other skills covered are suffixes –er, -or, and –ist, and using context clues to help determine the meaning of a given word. We will also practice using a time line. The test is scheduled for Friday morning over the story and the skills covered above.

- We will beginning our next theme called “American Stories”. The first story we will be reading is entitled “Tomas and the Library Lady.” The test over the story will be on Friday. Remind your child to bring their reading book home to reread the story before the test.

- Students will be assigned their first Daily Oral Geography sheet this week and they can use maps in their books, on their computers, or even Google to find the answers by Friday.
- We will finish reading about the geography of the NE Region of the United States and get ready to take our first test over this region this week.
- This week we will use place value understanding to round multi-digit numbers to any place value using real world application and use place value understanding to fluently add multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm and apply the algorithm to solve word problems using tape diagrams.
- The students will be going to the outdoor classroom on Friday during their specials time.

Reading and Language Arts:
- We will be wrapping up our Journeys theme this week and focus on a new genre of reading entitled mysteries. The students will become familiar with common mystery terminology and read two short mysteries. Grammar will consist of writing different kinds of sentences and knowing the difference between a phrase and a complete sentence. The spelling list will consist of more short and long vowel words and be introduced to idioms.
- We will continue with our unit on plant needs, parts of a plant and their roles in making food, and the plant life cycles. We should be ready to test over it by the end of this week.
- We will be taking our mid-module assessment over the first 7 lessons of module 1 and continue with lessons 8 and 9 for the rest of the week. We will be rounding multi-digit numbers to the thousands place using a vertical line.
- Your child should have their multiplication facts memorized through the 5’s by now. Please check to see if they do.
- I will be checking over Reading Counts this weekend to see who has not taken their first RC test over the book they have been reading for the past several weeks. If they don’t get one passed by Monday, they will lose some recess time to catch up on their reading.
- We will be finishing up on our story “By the Shores of Silver Lake” on Monday and testing over the spelling words, grammar skill on nouns, the story, and the other reading strategies and skills covered over this story on Tuesday.
- The rest of the week, we will be reviewing the theme of Journeys and reading to short stories entitled “Chester Cricket’s Pigeon Ride” and “The Parcel Post Kid.” Our spelling list will consist of words we have already had and grammar skills that have been covered during this theme.
- We will also begin our first writing piece called a personal narrative. Students will tell about an event that has happened to them that they would like to share with us.
- We will continue working with Module 1 lessons 6 and 7 this week. Students will be asked to find 1,10, and 100 thousand more and less than a given number, and rounding whole numbers.
- We will be learning about plant needs, the parts of a plant, and how they reproduce.
- Please make sure that your child is reading 15 minutes every evening and practicing their multiplication facts. Memorization of these facts are the key to becoming stronger students in math!
- On Wednesday, there will be an early dismissal at 1:00.
- We will be going to the Care Center on Friday at 2:30 to play Bingo with the residents.
- We will be wrapping up our story on Finding the Titanic on Monday and testing over it on Tuesday. (Spelling test and Skills test as well….)
- The next story we will be starting is called By the Shores of Silver Lake by Laura Ingalls Wilder.
- We will be working with new vocabulary terms commonly used with a train ride, learn how to fill out a detail map, learn how to identify common nouns, and practice using homophones.
- Read and write multi-digit numbers using base ten numerals, number names, and expanded form.
- Compare numbers based on meanings of the digits, using greater than, less than, and equal to record comparison.

- Our next unit is on Animal Behavior and Growth. Students will learn about the basic needs of animals, how animals’ body parts help meet their needs, and how animals’ behavior help them meet their needs.
